FLOWERING AT THE RIGHT TIME TO MAXIMIZE YIELD. BARLEY CULTIVATION ACROSS SEASONS AND CLIMATES

Microsoft Teams virtual classroom

May 12, 2021 (Wednesday), 4.00 pm

Dr. Ernesto Igartua Arregui (Aula Dei Experimental Station, CSIC, Zaragoza, Spagna)

The growth cycle of annual crops must be optimized to match the availability of resources (water, nutrients), and to avoid environmental risks caused by climate extremes. We will cover the history of the barley crop, since its domestication in the Fertile Crescent until the present, cultivated in all continents except Antarctica. How is it possible that a crop adapts to such diversity of conditions? The seminar will cover a description of the developmental phases of the crop, the genes that govern the main developmental transitions, the environmental conditions that trigger them, the climate threats, and the genetic diversity that appears as a consequence of the domestication, selection and spread processes.
