A PROJECT TO STUDY THE INTRAVARIETAL VARIABILITY OF GRAPEVINE CULTIVARS “SANGIOVESE”

The Banfi Foundation has funded a project entitled “Study of the intravarietal variability of the Sangiovese cultivar by epigenetic changes”. The Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (leader) and the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics – Viticulture and Enology Research Center of Arezzo are the two partners. The aim of this project is to identify the epigenetic changes responsible for the intravarietal variability of the grapevine cultivar “Sangiovese”. Epigenetic phenomena modify gene expression through DNA methylation and/or demethylation and are a mechanism by which the plants respond to or adapt to environmental stress conditions. The project will make use of the cutting-edge technologies (NGS – new generation sequencing) for the sequencing of methyloma.
