GO-AHEAD MONALISA PROJECT (MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR IMPROVING COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS MANAGEMENT AND REUSE)
MONAlISa project, funded by Fondazione Cariplo, will provide a hydraulic-quality modelling framework able to simulate (i) the propagation of combined sewer overflows in the rural canal network, assessing the downstream flooding risks, (ii) the reduction of pollutant loads along the network achieved by inherent phytoremediation capacity and also exploiting the implementation of targeted Nature Based Solutions along selected receiving water body sections. The project will fill the gap between urban and rural environments in the management of stormwater, involving the water manager, the irrigation-reclamation agency of the metropolitan city of Milan, and Lombardy region authority as main stakeholders. Project outcomes will support authorities and water managers in planning strategies that mitigate CSOs pressure on agricultural and environmental fields, and will promote a safe and informed reuse of stormwater for a sustainable future based on the principles of Circular Economy.
