In Lombardy Region, the intensive livestock production systems produces large quantities of slurry and manure that need to be managed because of their impact on soil, water and air. Misuses of slurry are responsible for nitrate leaching into both shallow and deep water and for ammonia emission into the air. In this context the evaluation of the excessive accumulation of nutrients in the soil, nitrogen and phosphorous in particular, is extremely important. On the other hand, the efficient and appropriate use in agriculture of organic fertilizers coming from organic wastes requires more in-depth knowledge both in terms of quality and fertilizer value. Only in this way, it will be possible to support crop production and protect the environment, saving the soil resource.
