CLEVERMILK PROJECT: INTELLIGENT USE OF TECHNOLOGY FOR LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MILK

The Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences participates as Project Manager and Scientific Manager in the project entitled ‘CLEVERMILK: INTELLIGENT USE OF TECHNOLOGY FOR A LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MILK’ which has the aim of finding management strategies to mitigate the impact environment of farm-gate milk production. We intend to achieve this with the quantification of the environmental benefit that can be obtained from correct dairy management, especially when supported by technology. We have chosen to focus attention on some of the management aspects (monitoring of the production level, udder health, foot health and monitoring of the reproductive state of the animals) that most frequently lead to economic losses (direct or indirect) also related to the choice of reform or not an animal (figure).

From the project activities, practical indications will therefore be produced on the most correct management choices in order to mitigate the environmental impact of milk production.

The project will also disseminate a ‘life cycle-assessment (LCA)’ process logic, a circular approach that can help operators in the sector, even as consumers, to understand where and how to act to improve the sustainability of activities human.
